Jacarilla is a beautiful, quiet village located in the Vega Baja region of the Alicante province. It is very close to the old, historic town of Orihuela and has excellent road communication to all the local villages like Bigastro, Algorfa, Benejuzar, Dolores, Almoradi etc., to the coast with it's touristic towns like Torrevieja, Guadamar, La Marina, etc. and to the airports, the closest being Alicante and Murcia each with only a 30 minute drive away. It has a small, but steadily growing, population of around 2000 people, and of that 12% is of foreign nationality. Jacarilla has the amenities needed to live a comfortable life. There are banks, chemists, local police station, local medical centre, an infant school, a public swimming pool, bars, shops, restaurants and the most beautiful public park with massive gardens and a stately home. Most of these are located on Jacarillas main street, which runs right the way through the town. Anything that is not here is only a short drive away to the next town, or 30 minutes to the major service towns like Torrevieja, Elche, Orihuela or Alicante, that are filled with fashion shops, big supermarkets, cinemas, bowling alleys, casinos, and many other entertaining features.
The palace garden, as it is known locally, is a spectacular, public park open every day of the week. It is over 200 years old and has an extension of 20,000 m2. It is like a small oasis located in the dry lands of the Vega Baja, with its tall palm trees providing escape from the blazing sun during the summer months. The stately home itself was built many years ago and at the moment is privately owned, but there has been mention of plans to transform it into a hotel, something that will really put Jacarilla on the map.
As you can see, this is a very Spanish village and there is a definite sleepy atmosphere which makes Jacarilla such an inviting place. It is very easy to integrate with other residents and to get into the Spanish community, as well as there being other English residents. It really is a lovely place to live, away from the hustle and bustle that generally comes with the coastal towns. A perfect place to start a new life in a different country.
